Well isolation specialist, Meta Downhole Ltd (Meta), got 2015 World Oil Awards. The awards, which honour the upstream energy segment’s leading innovators and innovations, will take place in Houston on 15 October.
The Liner Hanger has no elastomers. Crucially to Operators this means it meets the worst-case ‘Maximum Discharge’ standard ratings in the Gulf of Mexico. Additionally, this technology allows the liner hanger to make an optimum connection as the method is insensitive to casing ID tolerances.
Underpinned with Meta’s patented Metalmorphology technology, the Meta Liner Tieback makes planning for future drilling and production challenges easier.
By morphing metal downhole, it connects the liner to a tieback receptacle built into the previously run casing string, resulting in a fully compliant, V0 ISO14310 certified, metal-to-metal connection, with no reduction in internal diameter and no reliance on elastomers, capable of offering full integrity for the lifetime of the well.
The Liner Tieback means no weak points in the completions or casing string and pre-empts unforeseen structural integrity issues.
Limited IDs in casing strings can be overcome to achieve high load bearing capabilities, and through pre-installation the start-up of slot recovery operations when the well needs a change of direction due to a depleted reservoir are made possible, thus future proofing a well.
The durability of a metal-to-metal seal enables the Liner Tieback to operate at pressures of up to 13,500psi at temperatures of 320F, with an axial load bearing capability of up to 3,500,000lbs, making it ideal for deepwater challenges.
The Meta Liner Tieback® makes planning for future drilling and production challenges easier. Incorporate the Meta Liner Tieback® into your well architecture and your well’s structural integrity can be assured, drilling can go deeper with no restrictions on load bearing capabilities, intervention and risk can be avoided and future enhanced oil recovery plans embedded.
The Meta Liner Tieback® is a V0 ISO 14310 certified, full axial load bearing connection system that enables operators to connect their liners to a tieback string of casing through a permanent and durable metal-to-metal seal. Its impressive load bearing capabilities coupled with no elastomers means that this technology meets, and in some cases exceeds, legislative requirements for the life of the well.
The Meta Liner Tieback ® means no weak points in the completions or casing string and pre-empts unforeseen structural integrity issues. The Meta Liner Tieback® removes the time consuming space out process, which saves costly rig time. Finally, the Meta Liner Tieback® also allows (through pre-installation) the start-up of slot recovery operations when the well needs a change of direction and the reservoir is being depleted, therefore future-proofing your well.
Strengthen your capability with the Meta Liner Tieback® by proactively planning for future well integrity and productivity now.
Applications
•Structural integrity: Meta’s Liner Tieback system enables operators to connect their liners to a tieback string of casing through a full axial load bearing metal-to-metal seal, therefore no weak points in the casing string. The Meta Liner Tieback® overcomes challenges caused by ECD pressures and can reduce the need for a second stage cement job. Its impressive load bearing capabilities coupled with no elastomers means that this technology has high value in deepwater and ultra deepwater fields in demonstrating well integrity compliance to regulators.
•Extended reach drilling: With high axial load bearing capabilities and metal-to-metal seals the Meta Liner Tieback® allows for deeper drilling.
•Slot recovery: Operators planning in additional Meta Liner Tiebacks® for future slot recovery operations can reap the benefits of improved production and enhanced recovery years down the line when the well requires intervention as the reservoir is being depleted.
•Equivalent circulating density (ECD)
•Legislative Compliance: Well architectures in deepwater fields have become more complex and challenging following the Macondo incident, which resulted in the US government issuing a six month moratorium on deepwater drilling activities in the GoM. Although now lifted, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Regulation & Enforcement (BOEMRE) requested additional information on well planning activities. These regulations have made it necessary for operators to alter well designs and strengthen their well architectures to demonstrate compliance in safety and environmental procedures. Meta’s Liner Tieback system, with its metal-to-metal sealing technology which has no reliance on elastomers along with its high axial load bearing capabilities, meets and in some cases even exceeds these design parameters. The Liner Tieback can be incorporated into existing well architecture with minimal disruption to original drilling programmes.

Application Examples
Liner Tieback – Drilling Liner & Slot Recovery
To be able to reach setting depths of 30,000ft or more, operators are increasing the number of casing strings in their well designs. Annular clearances are getting tighter and operators are being forced more and more to use flush joint type connections. Today’s liner hanger equipment on the market is unable to match the ratings of the casing in these well designs, especially when the liner needs to be tied back to surface. With the introduction of the Meta Liner Tieback® system operators are able to run a conventional hanger system and tie the liner string back to the wellhead without loss of casing ratings and integrity. The Meta Liner Tieback® system can also be installed higher up the wellbore, thus allowing the operator to drill a new well bore for an existing well, without losing a slot in the subsea permanent guide structure.
Liner Tieback – ECD
As casing strings become longer, there is a large advantage of running the string in two stages. First install a liner string in the lower open-hole section of the well and then tying the liner back to the wellhead.
Performing this operation not only greatly reduces the ECD of the cement job and the installation time compared to running a long string. It also allows the operator to space out the tie back into the wellhead in a controlled environment. Running the Meta Liner Tieback® system in the Liner Hanger assembly gives the operator full V0 rated downhole casing connection integrity.
