Danish coatings specialist Hempel has rolled out a highly flexible two-coat water repellent coating – Hempatop Repel 800 aimed at faster application and reduced maintenance on offshore structures and similar applications.
According to Hempel, the new topcoat offers enhanced corrosion protection by actively repelling water from the coated surface and by enabling the use of fewer coating layers, this solution for offshore assets and installations can be applied faster and lasts longer than conventional coatings solutions.
For optimum protection, Hempatop Repel 800 is used in combination with Hempel’s ground-breaking patented Avantguard technology activated zinc primer – Avantguard 770. The first volumetric water repellent topcoat on the market, Hempatop Repel 800 (used with Avantguard as the first coat) delivers improved flexibility and crack resistance, increased adhesion retention and minimises corrosion.
The two products work together to create what is described as an extremely robust anti-corrosive system. This unique two-coat system requires one coat less than standard protective coatings solutions for offshore installations and lasts significantly longer. This simplifies the construction and maintenance processes of offshore assets, and reduces costs for owners.
Oriol Osso, Head of Energy, Group Product Management, Hempel, said, We have found that traditional three-coat systems used for offshore structures regularly show signs of early coating failure. This is primarily due to water ingress through the coating system, stress induced micro-cracking andor mechanical damage. This leaves asset owners with unsustainable maintenance costs. Our new Hempatop Repel 800, used in combination with our innovative activated zinc primer Avantguard 770, simplifies the process and addresses all these challenges. Assets can now be protected for longer, reducing the frequency and cost of ongoing maintenance.
The Hempatop Repel 800 system can be applied in just one day reducing the man-hours required for applicators offshore, saving time and money for asset owners. Designed to be easily applied with conventional or airless application equipment, this solution delivers further efficiencies to the applicator and owner. Hempatop Repel 800 is now available worldwide through local Hempel technical representatives.
Description
Hempatop Repel 800 is a two component advanced water repellent polyurethane coating. The system offers exceptional anti-corrosion protection, robust mechanical properties, and ease of application.
Area of use
Hempatop Repel 800 is designed to be used as the top coat in a two coat system with Hempel’s Hempadur Avantguard 770, activated zinc epoxy primer, for demanding C5 and CX environments as define by ISO 12944-2:2018. Suitable for structural steel, pipe, vessels, minimum two meters above the splash zone
An advanced water-repellent coating, Hempatop Repel 800 protects your offshore assets for longer to significantly reduce the frequency and cost of ongoing maintenance.
Analysis shows that one of the primary causes of coating failure is water ingress through the coating system. We have developed Hempatop Repel 800 to address this challenge. An advanced topcoat with water-repellent technology, Hempatop Repel 800 actively repels water from the coated surface to protect the coatings and steel beneath – leading to significantly better protection for steel in offshore environments.
A breakthrough two-coat system for offshore structures
The traditional three-coat systems used for offshore assets regularly show signs of early failure, leaving the owner facing unsustainable maintenance costs. The solution is a new two-coat system based on Hempatop Repel 800.
Combining Hempatop Repel 800 with our market leading activated zinc primer Hempadur Avantguard 770, our water-repellent system outperforms current three-coat systems in both durability and ease of application. The result? Faster application, outstanding corrosion protection and longer maintenance intervals.
Faster application for lower offshore maintenance costs
Our water-repellent two-coat system can be applied in a single day, considerably faster than conventional three-coat systems, which can take up to four days to apply. This vastly cuts asset downtime during maintenance and reduces the need for overnight accommodation, leading to significant savings in both time and money.
Proven superior performance
In extensive tests, our water-repellent two-coat system significantly outperformed conventional three-coat systems in offshore environments.
Water-repellent technology provides superior control of rust creepage at scribe by avoiding the evolution of corrosion, which ensures an extended coating lifetime despite accidental damage during service.
Testing done according to NACE TM0404 Section 7 (ASTM D5894) 1 week UV/condensation cycle + 1 week fog/dry chamber with synthetic seawater. Duration: 12 weeks.
Hempatop Repel 800’s improved mechanical properties tolerate excessive dry film thicknesses in areas prone to over-application, which are particularly common during maintenance work.
ISO approved
Our water-repellent two-coat system meets the test requirements of ISO12944:2018 Part 9 for a CX category and is pre-qualified for NORSOK M-501 Ed. 6, System 1.
