The drop was unexpected. Analysts surveyed by the Wall Street Journal in advance of the EIA weekly inventory report had expected crude supplies would have risen by 1.9 million bbl for the week. EIA’s Petroleum Status Report also showed US oil production fell to 12 million b/d, down slightly from a record 12.1 million b/d reported for the week ended Mar. 1. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries on Mar. 14 said in its Monthly Oil Report that cartel production fell 221,000 b/d in February compared with January figures. OPEC’s February production averaged 30.55 million b/d, according to secondary sources. Crude oil output decreased mostly in Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq, while production edged up in Libya and Angola in February compared with January, OPEC’s report said. Energy prices The April contract for light, sweet crude oil on the New York Mercantile Exchange increased $1.39 to settle at $58.26/bbl on Mar. 13. The contract for May delivery also gained $1.39 to settle at $58.59/bbl. NYMEX natural gas for April increased nearly 4¢ to a rounded $2.82/MMbtu on Mar. 13. Ultralow-sulfur diesel for April edged up less than 1¢ to a rounded $1.99/gal. The NYMEX reformulated gasoline blendstock for April increased 4¢ to $1.85/gal. Brent crude for May delivery increased 88¢ to $67.55/bbl while the June contract increased 88¢ to settle at $67.46/bbl. The gas oil contract for April gained $1.25 to $609.25/tonne on Mar.13. The average price for OPEC’s basket of crudes was $66.60/bbl on Mar. 13, up 30¢.
