The acquisition increases Total’s overall stake in the liquefied natural gas project on Russia’s Gydan Peninsula to 21.6%, given the French energy major’s 19.4% stake in Novatek and Novatek’s intention to retain 60% of the project, Total said. Total can further increase its direct stake in the project to 15% should Novatek opt to reduce its participation below 60%, Total said. The two companies also agreed that Total will have the opportunity to acquire a 10%-15% direct stake in all of Novatek’s future LNG projects on Russia’s Yamal and Gydan peninsulas. Arctic LNG 2 will have a production capacity of 19.8 million tonnes per year, or 535,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, Total said. Total said the project’s final investment decision should be taken in the second half of 2019, with the first liquefaction train slated to start up in 2023.
