LUKOIL and KazMunayGas (KMG) signed a protocol on granting the subsoil use right to explore and produce hydrocarbons in the framework of joint activities on the Zhenis block in the Kazakhstan sector of the Caspian Sea shelf. Also during the meeting, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Ministry of Energy, KMG and LUKOIL represented by LUKOIL Kazakhstan Upstream. As part of the joint negotiations, a number of important agreements were reached. In particular, the payment of a subscription bonus in favor of Kazakhstan was agreed. The Zhenis Block is located in the Kazakhstan sector of the Caspian Sea at a depth of 75-100 m. The distance to the coast is 80 km, to the Kazakh port of Aktau, 180 km. The license area is 6848 sq. Km. LUKOIL’s interest in the development of the Zhenis block, as well as of another IP-2 block, became known on April 5, 2018. The interest is quite expected, since the LUKOIL and KazMunaiGaz – Tsentralnoye joint ventures (LUKOIL and Gazprom Neft own shares of 25% each) and the Khvalynskoye field (50% share of LUKOIL) are located near this area. The agreement on the principles on the Zhenis project between LUKOIL and KMG, which fixed the main conditions for joint exploration, was concluded on June 5, 2018. November 30, 2018 the companies signed a joint venture agreement and a financing agreement. Over 7-9 years, LUKOIL plans to invest about $ 350 million in exploration on the Zhenis block.
