Continental European LNG regasification sets record quarter so far this decade The amount of LNG regasification in Continental Europe reached a new record high for a quarterly period over the Christmas holidays despite falling at the end of the previous week, data from S&P Global Platts Analytics showed. LNG regas levels so far during the final three months of 2018 stood at 14.498 Bcm of natural gas equivalent between the gas days of October 1 and December 26, moving above the previous record for a quarterly period of 14.275 Bcm from the pre-Fukushima Q3 2010 period. Continental Europe has been flush with LNG so far during this winter-delivery period as a combination of weak Asian demand for spot LNG allied to strong shipping rates has seen LNG heading towards Continental European terminals and sent into the grids with reloads well out of the money. Indeed, regas rates from Continental Europe so far during Winter 2018/19 are already 65% higher on an annual basis and only 18% shy of the Winter 2017/18 total of 17.706 Bcm. Moreover, the record high quarterly LNG regas rates have come despite the fact that LNG regas in Spain has actually come in lower on an annual basis so far during the final quarter of the year. Spain — typically the country in Continental Europe most reliant on LNG supply — has seen an annual decrease of 10% so far during the final quarter of the year, with every other country in Continental Europe reporting solid increases. LNG regasification in Continental Europe has wound down in recent weeks due to demand falling on the back of largely mild temperatures and the Christmas holiday period. LNG regas averaged 181 million cu m/d in November, but averaged 155 million cu m/d over the gas days of December 1-26 and fell back to an 11-week low of 114 million cu m on December 23.
