Mexico’s CRE approves first permit for private oil products pipeline
Mexico’s Energy Regulatory Commission or CRE has granted the country’s first permit to a
private company to transport refined products via pipeline, a key step towards enhancing
efficiency in the domestic fuel market.
CRE late Friday granted the infrastructure subsidiary of Mexican financial group Invex a
permit to install and operate the Tajin pipeline system, which will connect Tuxpan port in
Veracruz to the greater Mexico City region.
ExxonMobil Mexico’s general manager for fuel markets, Carlos Rivas, had earlier told S&P
Global Platts that the US energy company was one of the project’s main offtakers.
Rivas said ExxonMobil would supply fuel to the region surrounding Mexico City in the first
half of 2019 once Tajin’s first phase was completed. By then, Invex is due to have installed
storage tanks at Tuxpan port and in the Valley of Mexico, moving refined products initially
via truck, with a pipeline system to follow over the next 18 months to three years to
connect the two locations, he said.
