AnTech has announced the launch of RockView – a technology that makes real-time, high-resolution geosteering possible for the first time, according to the company.
The breakthrough will enable more accurate wellbore placement and provide a tangible decrease in the amount of footage drilled out of zone. This will lead to a direct improvement in the production of a well.
Predicting the exact position of a target reservoir from surface is difficult and requires geosteering to analyze the cuttings returning from the bit or with logging while drilling tools positioned back from the bit. Both of these methods involve a delay between the time that the bit drills a formation and the time that the formation is identified.
The RockView service works by using the measurements gathered from the full range of sensors on AnTech’s latest generation COLT and POLARIS BHAs. Using proprietary techniques, these can be combined to determine how hard it is to drill through a particular rock formation.
The new technology offers considerable advantages over current methods of geosteering, which are accurate but suffer from limitations which delay the transmission of data.
RockView has been developed to mitigate that delay in service for wells that can be drilled with coil tubing. It provides near-instantaneous information about conditions at the bit and fine linear resolution. The directional driller can determine which formation is being drilled by comparing to logs prepared by geologists. The well trajectory can be adjusted to keep the drill bit in zone thereby avoiding the overshooting that can be caused by other geosteering methods.
“RockView is an exciting innovation for the industry,” Toni Miszewski, Managing Director of AnTech, said. “It will increase drilling productivity because it is an at-bit technology that will help the directional driller identify the target zone and then keep in zone. Inaccurate drilling reduces well output and is simply a waste of time and money. Predictability reduces the financial risk to operators and provides a much-needed increase in drilling efficiency, which has sometimes been lacking in the industry.”
COLT
Access bypassed reserves using our COLT BHA System for 3-5/8″ to 4-3/4″ hole sizes
With over 70% of the world’s production coming from mature fields and with the average recovery factor of oil and gas being 35% and 70% respectively, it is not surprising that operators are looking at creative ways to access bypassed reserves and lengthen the life of their declining wells. Coiled Tubing Drilling provides the technique to directionally target these untapped sweet spots within the reservoir. By re-entering a well, you avoid the large infrastructure costs and lead times associated with grassroots drilling.
Our COLT system has been designed specifically for re-entry and thru-tubing drilling applications for hole sizes between 3-5/8″ and 4-3/4″ that can be used with single and multi-phase drilling fluid. The Bottom Hole Assembly is powered electrically on heptacable and is magnetically steered. It also has the unique capability of gyro orientation for casing exits avoiding the need to drill blindly near casing.
COLT is the shortest CTD BHA on the market providing safer and easier deployment and increased Weight-On-Bit for maximum lateral reach. It is designed to withstand the harsh environmental conditions that occur when drilling in underbalanced conditions and is equipped with a complete suite of sensors for instant feedback of downhole drilling conditions. This real-time feedback combined with an electric orienter that rotates continuously, gives precise control when navigating complex reservoirs and allowing build and straight sections to be drilled in the same run. By drilling a straight hole we can drill further with more weight-on-bit.
The COLT family of tools includes the supporting tools required to orient and set whipstocks and then monitor the performance of the milling run for cutting the casing window.
POLARIS BHA
The 5″ POLARIS system is the only CTD BHA available on the market capable of drilling hole sizes up to 8-1/2” and has been designed for grass-roots directional drilling applications, but can also be used for re-entry applications where larger hole sizes are required or preferred.
Larger hole sizes require higher flow rates, which are not possible through smaller tools, and many alternative drilling options are limited by their inability to operate in aerated fluids such as nitrogen mist and foam. As well as drilling simple shallow wells, POLARIS can also drill multiple wells from a single pad with integration of our solid state gyro-based directional measurement unit. However, for operations where continuous circulation is required, and therefore stopping to take gyro surveys is not possible, the POLARIS system is also available as a magnetically-steered configuration.
TWO WORLD FIRSTS
POLARIS was used to drill the worlds first horizontal well using Gyro While Drilling (GWD) technology. On the same campaign it was also the first time GWD was used for the severe conditions of an air drilled well.
FEATURES & BENEFITS
WORLD’S SHORTEST CTD BHA
Enables easy deployment above the master valve and sensor positions are close to the bit for more accurate navigation. This has significant safety and operational benefits.
CONTINUOUS ORIENTER ROTATION
Continuous CW or CCW rotation of the orienter allows the build and straight section to be drilled in the same run. This feature also prevents sinusoidal well paths from ever being drilled which increases your WOB and consequently your lateral reach. No other BHA on the market has this feature.
LIVE WELL DEPLOYMENT
Allows the BHA to be assembled within the BOP when operating with a live well where there is insufficient height above the master valve.
MAGNETICALLY STEERED FORM
The Magnetic DMU is a field proven module which offers high data rate azimuth derived from the geomagnetic field. Inclination and Toolface are delivered at the same rate. The high data density, coupled with our wireline telemetry enables novel Quality Control techniques to be used, delivering improved accuracy, even on surveys taken while drilling.
HIGH SPEED DATA TRANSMISSION VIA E-LINE
Allows real-time feedback of downhole conditions that are essential for efficient drilling with coiled tubing where small, fast changing parameters have a significant effect on drilling performance. The wireline telemetry also means that signals can be transmitted in multi-phase fluid conditions
