Saudis Say June Oil Output Rose Prior to OPEC Move to Boost Production
By Benoit Faucon
Saudi Arabia told OPEC on Wednesday that its oil output rose last month, nearing levels not seen since the country embarked on production cuts in 2016, with the rise starting before the group decided to increase cartel production in late June.
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its Russia-led allies had in late June agreed to boost output by an effective 600,000 barrels a day starting July 1, with the bulk of the increase to come from Saudi Arabia.
The kingdom had been under pressure from the U.S. to fill the production gap ahead of upcoming sanctions on Iran’s oil exports. But in OPEC’s monthly report, Saudi Arabia said its production averaged 10.489 million barrels a day, an on-month increase of 459,000 barrels a day and close to its level before embarking on cuts of 10.544 million barrels a day.
Overall, production from OPEC’s 15 members, including newest addition the Republic of the Congo, increased by 173,000 barrels a day to average 32.33 million barrels a day, according to secondary sources.
