Saudis Start to Ramp Up Oil Output, Ahead of OPEC Meeting Saudi Arabia has started boosting oil production, say Saudi oil officials, moving ahead of a June 22 meeting of OPEC during which big producers said they would consider loosening the taps. Last month, Saudi Arabia’s oil minister said he was considering relaxing production cuts that it had earlier orchestrated alongside other big oil producers including members of Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and Russia. They set those cuts in 2016 when oil prices were low to drain a global glut of crude and to boost prices. Now that prices are back up again — topping $80 a barrel briefly recently for international crude — big consuming nations including the U.S. have complained, worried about its effect on their economies. Concern about further crimps to global supplies has mounted amid big outages in Venezuela and Washington’s move to reinstate economic sanctions on Iran. Ahead of the Vienna meeting, Saudi oil officials said the country has already began boosting output last month by more than 100,000 barrels a day, hitting about 10 million barrels a day. These officials said Saudi plans to boost output by at least another 100,000 barrels a day this month but didn’t specify exactly when. “The move will help ease concerns in the market” over Iranian disruptions, one of the officials said.
