The Baker Hughes TeleCoilTM intelligent coiled tubing (CT) service eliminates the guesswork and assumptions associated with traditional CT operations by providing operators with accurate downhole information. Using real-time data acquired by the TeleCoil service, you can verify depth, enhance BHA functionality, monitor the progress of the job, and validate the success or failure of the operation. The TeleCoil service takes the blindfold off CT activities. It helps you react to changing conditions, make decisions based on dynamic downhole events, and eliminate missed or wasted runs with better reactions to dynamic conditions. TeleCoil data lets you know when the operation is successful and when it isn’t.
When the job is done, you’ll have a greater understanding of exactly what happened downhole. Not only can you assess and validate the job, you can also plan the next step based on accurate and relevant information. The TeleCoil service protects your asset and enhances its economic potential by eliminating uncertainty and facilitating better decision making.
Perform back-to-back operations
The TeleCoil service assists you in performing seamless transitions between enhanced CT operations and wireline, while making both of these services more effective. With plug-and- play functionality, the TeleCoil service will also help you take the next step without having to rig down and rig back up. You can run one tool down the hole; perform the planned operation; pull out; and put the next appropriate tool on the string and run back down, based on TeleCoil data reporting what happened and the downhole conditions.
You don’t have to wait for another tool to arrive or for another supplier. No waiting for offsite experts to get back from lunch. The TeleCoil service reduces your downtime with real-time information that improves your productivity and your well’s production.
Fine-tune CT operations
The TeleCoil service fine-tunes CT operations and provides more opportunities to improve well performance. It eliminates the uncertainty inherent in coiled tubing jobs and reduces risks. The TeleCoil service is adaptable to a wide range of CT and intervention work. It does not interfere with downhole operations, has no effect on flow rate, and adds negligible reel weight.
The TeleCoil service is more robust and reliable than fiber-optic technology, which is prone to breakage in high-vibration, high-rate environments. TeleCoil also provides higher data resolution at a faster speed than mud pulse telemetry. Additionally, the TeleCoil service components can transmit power, without battery limitations, while receiving real-time data.
TeleCoil logging services
TeleCoil logging services lets you deploy any single conductor wireline to precisely locate, define, and treat your well’s specific failure challenge. With traditional CT logging, tools are generally run in memory mode, which generally produces bad logging results because of tool speed. The well’s parameters aren’t identified until after the run.
TeleCoil changes all that. It uses real-time data to adjust wireline settings and well parameters, ensuring exceptional results and eliminating a missed run. The TeleCoil logging adapter eliminates many of the challenges associated with CT logging, including excessive e-line weight, incompatibility with oilfield fluids and slurries, excessive flow pressures, and inability to drop balls.
The logging results can also provide diagnostic information such as temperature surveys for reservoir connectivity, real-time matrix acidizing, determination of gas to liquid ratios, and fluid connectivity for matrix acidizing. Downhole power can run tools indefinitely, operate mechanical pipe cutters, and fire TCP guns.
Well intervention and performance applications
Baker Hughes well intervention and performance (WIP) applications make use of the TeleCoil services’ robust data acquisition and delivery system. Once the data has been acquired and analyzed, consecutive CT operations can be planned and executed without multiple rigups.
Video data application
Attaching a video camera to the standard BHA used by the TeleCoil service, operators can visually examine the wellbore’s condition before or after CT operations. The visual data can help select the appropriate tool and then verify the results after the tool has been used.

A high-producing, offshore Norwegian oil well was shut in for two years because deposits
and sand in the wellbore had caused a failed intervention. This stranded 72 ft (22 m) of tool string (consisting of a production logging tool [PLT]and a dual e-line tractor) and approximately 1,150 ft (350 m) of seven conductor cable.
The length of the fish and lubricator height precluded live well operations or any hydrocarbon returns to surface. After multiple retrieval attempts had failed, the operator contacted Baker Hughes. Baker Hughes recommended the TeleCoilTM intelligent coiled tubing (CT) service.
The TeleCoil service provided an advanced, reliable approach to complex interventions by acquiring accurate downhole information— depth correlation as well as pressure and temperature measurements—that eliminated the guesswork and assumptions associated with traditional CT operations.
The TeleCoil service included a real-time, high- definition camera and normal fishing tools. The system was on a 23/8-in. (60-mm) CT string.
Debris was removed and a clear image was established for further evaluation. This prevented time-consuming and expensive well fluid displacement. The quality of the image was controlled from the surface and provided greater insight into downhole conditions.
Live downhole data and video were transmitted to both the operator’s onshore operation center and the Baker Hughes BEACONTM Center to facilitate decision making in an extensive and meticulous planning session that refined the fishing strategy.
Using the strategy, the TeleCoil service assisted in retrieving the entire BHA fish in one run after the cable was out.
Baker Hughes then used the TornadoTM cleanout tool with motor and mill to reestablish the well’s previous production rate—helping the field production efficiency target.
Based on a significant collaborative effort between Baker Hughes and the operator’s staff, the operation was completed without anyHSE incidents.
Results
- Enabled successful CT fishing returning well to production after two-year shut-in
- Cleaned debris from producing interval
- Facilitated decision making by providing real-time data and images to onshore staff
