Iran Sanctions Could Force OPEC to Scrap Output Cut President Donald Trump’s decision this week to abandon the Iran nuclear deal and re-impose economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic has bolstered oil prices on concerns global supply will be reduced. That could prompt the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and partner producers, including Russia, to halt their agreement to curb oil output, according to Thomas Pugh, commodities economist at Capital Economics. “If the reimposition of sanctions on Iran leads to a reduction in Iran’s oil output and exports, OPEC and its allies could exit the deal at the end of the year or even sooner in order to prevent a supply shortage in the oil market,” Pugh wrote. He added: “The ability of OPEC and its allies to offset any reduction in output from Iran should prevent oil prices from rising too much further this year.”
