Brazilian state-led oil producer and refiner Petrobras registered a 4.4% year-on-year decrease in domestic crude oil production in the first quarter as asset sales and ongoing platform maintenance at offshore fields offset growing output from the subsalt region, the company said Tuesday. Petrobras produced an average of 2.086 million b/d in Q1, down from 2.182 million b/d in the same quarter of 2017, the company said in financial statements released before stock markets opened. Q1 2018 output was also down 2.5% from the 2.140 million b/d produced in the fourth quarter of 2017. The decline reflects “programmed stoppages and the divestment of the Lapa field,” Petrobras said. Petrobras completed its sale of a 35% operating stake in Lapa to France’s Total in January. Petrobras retains a 10% minority stake in the subsalt field, which pumped first oil in December 2016. The maintenance work in recent months has primarily focused on overhauls at floating production, storage and offloading vessels, or FPSOs, that handle production from fields in the promising frontier region, where Petrobras holds a dominant position. The maintenance work accelerated in mid-2016 and has been cited as an important factor in lower output on a near-monthly basis. The company, however, actually expects production to decline to 2.1 million b/d in 2018, down from the 2.154 million b/d produced in 2017, because of plans to sell fields currently in production under the company’s $21 billion divestment plan for 2017-2018. Petrobras currently has more than 100 onshore and offshore fields on the auction block.
