Oil Retreats From Three-Year High as Geopolitical Risks to Receded Oil prices retreated from a three-year high on Monday as geopolitical risks to supply receded. Light, sweet crude for May delivery fell $1.17, or 1.7%, to $66.22 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, snapping a five-session winning streak. Brent, the global benchmark, fell $1.16, or 1.6%, to $71.42 a barrel. U.S. crude prices closed at the highest level since December 2014 on Friday, ahead of U.S.-led military strikes in Syria. But prices reversed course Monday after relatively restrained airstrikes didn’t appear to escalate tensions with the Syrian regime and its allies such as Russia. Still, geopolitical risk emanating from the Middle East has “by no means evaporated, and could soon ignite a renewed price rally” if the U.S. were to move to reimpose economic sanctions on Iran, the analysts wrote in a note Monday.
