Softbank Forays into Lithium, Eye on Battery Supply Chain SoftBank Group Corp. makes its first foray into commodities with an investment in lithium, used in phone and electric car batteries. The technology and investment group says it will spend as much as 99.1 million Canadian dollars to take up to a 9.9% stake in Canada’s Nemaska Lithium Inc. The investment will help SoftBank’s domestic telecom arm secure a stable source of the metal and could prelude further investments in the battery supply chain, a spokesman says. SoftBank will have the option to buy up to 20% of Nemaska’s annual lithium output, so long as it holds on to a 5% stake.
