The new line of Octopus? retrievable multistring electrical submersible pumping system packers (MS ESP packers) covers a broad performance envelope and offers a multitude of feedthrough configurations, providing customers with a one-stop-shop solution for well scenarios requiring an annular seal with conduits. Ideal for ESP applications, the packer delivers dependable isolation, flexible configurations, and more reliable run-in and retrieval to help control costs.
The patented Octopus? retrievable slimhole electrical submersible pumping system packer (SH ESP packer)—the industry’s first concentric ESP packer built for casing and liners 5 in. and smaller—provides customers with a reliable and, flexible solution for deploying and retrieving a qualified well barrier in slim inside diameter (ID) applications. Unlike small-size conventional ESP packers that have an eccentric design, the new Octopus SH ESP packer features a concentric design to keep it centered in the wellbore during run-in and retrieval. This significantly reduces the risk of hang-ups, making the packer ideal for deep, deviated, and/or lateral wells.
Applications
1.Wells requiring annular isolation and feedthrough capability
2.Wells with low reservoir pressure
Benefits
1.Offers configuration design flexibility to suit a wide variety of applications
2.Eases packer deployment through doglegs
3.Provides trouble-free run-in and retrieval
4.Remains anchored in place under high differential pressures
5.Protects strings from tensile strain
6.Sets reliably in applications where tool movement is restricted
7.Requires no intervention for actuation or retrieval
8.Provides reliable, API 11D1 V3-qualified sealing performance
Flexible feedthrough configurations
Because the new Octopus MS ESP packer tool body features a large cross section with an optimized through-bore design, it can accommodate a multitude of feedthrough configurations—ranging from standard dual-string designs to more complex intelligent well system designs—while maintaining a large flow area.
With three conduits oriented around the centralized through-tubing bore, the Octopus SH ESP packer enables passage of ESP cable, chemical injection lines, tubing-encapsulated cable (TEC) lines, and/or intelligent well system (IWS) fiber-optic cables while maintaining a full seal in the wellbore. In ESP applications, the cable is split into three single phases. Each phase is encapsulated in 8/8 in. 316L stainless steel and sealed with metal-to-metal compression fittings. The penetrator can be rated up to 5,000 V and 257 amps.
Enhanced construction and sealing
Leveraging multiple generations of field-proven designs, the Octopus SH ESP packer’s construction has been streamlined to reduce part count and complexity. It features a single, solid mandrel and comes standard with an ISO 14310 V3-qualified hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) sealing element to minimize potential leak paths and ensure a premium connection below the seal. A debris sleeve protects the penetrator conduits from flow erosion.
Simple deployment and setting
A compact tool body eases deployment through doglegs, allowing the packer to be reliably run to target depth. The packer is also simple to operate, requiring only applied tubing pressure to hydraulically activate its slips and packing element. During the Octopus packer’s timed setting sequence there is no relative movement between the tubing and the feedthrough lines, eliminating potential strain on strings or cables. This also allows the packer to be set in stacked applications where tool movement is restricted.

Reliable sealing and retrieval
Once actuated, the slips above the packing element support tensile loads while the slips below the element support compressive loads, keeping the packer firmly anchored in place under differential pressures up to 5,000 psi (345 bar) and loads up to 120,000 lb (54,431 kg). The packer comes standard with an API 11D1 V-3 qualified hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HBRN) element to provide reliable, zero-leakage isolation in downhole conditions up to 250?F (121?C).
When needed, the packer can be retrieved on the tubing string without intervention by simply applying a straight pull up to shear-release the tool. The compact design of the packer minimizes wellbore deflections as the tool pulled out of hole, helping to ensure fast, trouble-free retrieval.
The Octopus MS ESP packer is fully compatible with multiple ESP systems from Baker Hughes, a GE company (BHGE), including CENTrilift Xtreme Performance? ESP motors which provide extended run-life in harsh downhole conditions.
