The area represents about 70% of national motor fuel demand. Concerns that the final phase of the price liberalization will lead to another jump in pump costs are unfounded, says deputy finance minister Miguel Messmacher, who notes that no such increases were seen in regions where prices were freed earlier this year. The government will still adjust the gasoline tax on a weekly basis through 2018 to cushion swings in benchmark fuel prices and the exchange rate.
