The agreement, signed with Centrica LNG, begins in 2018 and calls for up to nine cargos of mostly US gas, sourced from the Louisiana terminal. The deal is the first medium-term LNG supply agreement for the company and the first midterm LNG contract for US gas in Central and Eastern Europe. Poland, and many of its neighbors, are largely dependent on natural gas deliveries from Russia sent over a network of pipelines. Producing gas in Russia is much cheaper than transporting LNG across the Atlantic, but Poland and other European countries want to diversify sources for their national security and to keep Russian gas prices in check.
