The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that crude inventories fell by 6.5 million barrels in the week ended Aug. 4, more than double analyst expectations for a 2.7 million barrel decline. U.S. crude futures settled up 39 cents, or 0.8%, at $49.56 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent, the global benchmark rose 56 cents, or 1.1%, to $52.70 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe. However, oil prices fluctuated between gains and losses throughout the day, as a build in gasoline stockpiles raised concerns about fuel demand as the summer wanes. The amount of gasoline in storage unexpectedly rose by 3.4 million barrels as refiners continued to churn out fuel at high rates.
