Oil-train shipments into California gain nearly 13% in 1Q, according to the latest data from the California Energy Commission. More crude from New Mexico’s Permian Basin and heavy oil from Canada is making its way into the state on railcars. New Mexico is a hot new shale drilling area, while Canadian oil is being shipped on a pipeline to an oil train depot in Wyoming and then railed to California. The state has more than a dozen refineries that can process up to 1.9M barrels a day, but California’s oil output has slumped in recent years to under 500,000 barrels a day, federal data show.
