The MPowerD? managed pressure drilling (MPD) system enables basic wellbore pressure control functionality for land rigs. The system allows drillers to maintain a constant wellbore pressure during drilling and connections, reducing the time and cost for operations in both conventional and unconventional plays. Wellbore pressure control improves wellbore stability, reducing the risk of hole collapse and differentially stuck pipe.
Our MPD system consists of a passive rotating control device (RCD) installed above the BOP and a side outlet that diverts the flow through an MPD choke manifold. The choke manifold consists of a pressure control choke, a pressure relief valve, and a bypass line. Additional flowlines and valves enables tie-in to the rig’s circulation system.
Any gas can be routed to a suitable return point, such as the mud-gas separator, to reduce nonproductive time and improve HSE on the drill floor. A choke operator can adjust the opening of the MPD choke from the control console, thereby manipulating the surface backpressure added to the wellbore. The surface backpressure can be adjusted to maintain wellbore pressure during connections and to proactively manage wellbore instabilities, enhancing well control and improving drilling efficiency.

MPowerD Pressure Control While Drilling System
NOV’s MPowerDTM managed pressure drilling (MPD) pressure con?trol while drilling (PCWD) is an active system with full API 16RCD certification that enables operators to safely control pressure in the annulus during underbalanced or MPD conditions.
The PCWD system is installed above the blowout preventer BOP stack. The rotating spherical BOP (RSBOP) is an annular BOP uti?lizing an elastomeric sealing element (packing element) capable of rotating and designed to close and seal the wellbore annular area with pipe or kelly in the hole. An annulus pressure seal can also be maintained while the drillstring is stripped during tripping operations. The unique aspect of the PCWD system is its method of sealing the annulus. The PCWD system is designed to maintain a seal, automatically adjusting the PCWD packing element clos?ing force as the wellbore pressure changes to minimize pipe drag and packing element wear.
