Tanker Rates to Benefit As CNOOC Ups Refining Capacity
Tanker freight rates are expected to rise over the summer as China National Offshore Oil Corporation or CNOOC will boost refining capacity at its Huizhou plant by the end of August, spurring demand for oil moved on very large crude carriers (VLCCs) from the Middle East. The refining expansion will double CNOOC’s crude processing capacity to 440,000 barrels per day with cargoes coming in mainly from Saudi Arabia. China is a key oil market player with imports at 8.8M barrels per day in May, a 15.4% on-year rise.
