The lack of clarity on the break-even cost for US shale producers is the biggest concern in the oil market, says Phin Ziebell, a National Australia Bank economist. He notes those firms have upended market forecasts consistently amid oil’s price slump of the past 3 years. WTI has pulled back 17% this year, and yet US oil producers have added nearly 40% to the number of active drilling rigs. “Surely this can’t go on forever,” he says, “but the worry is no one knows for how long.”
