Chinese Gasoline Demand to Keep Growing
Even if the Chinese economy softens, it won’t be a deathblow for oil, RBC says. China has long been the tiger of the commodity markets as its industrialization led to huge consumption growth. While that period is slowing, the changing nature of Chinese consumers can stabilize oil demand. They are buying a “staggering” number of cars now, with almost a third of them SUVs last year, the firm says. And unlike Americans who typically replace older, inefficient cars when they buy new ones, many in China are first-time buyers, meaning all those cars are going to create gasoline demand, RBC says. He estimates that growth at 250K to 290K barrels a day in 2017.
