The worlds largest superstructures are probably not what you think. They aren’t buildings and they aren’t towers, they are offshore engineering feats like no other, on the planet.
This infographic gives you the visual understanding of the true nature of our castles in the sea.The most significant engineering feats in the world belong to projects like Perdido and Ursa, which reach unprecedented depths at sea. Just imagine, envisioning, creating, architecting and building these magnificent feats. It’s truly amazing.
How Tall are the World’s Largest Offshore Oil Structures?
Can you guess the name of this superstructure?
When you hear word’s tallest structure ,most people tend to think of skyscrapers. These architectural mega projects were borne of the construction boom during the last half of the 20th century and the recent explosion of the middle east and asia.
But did you know that in terms of sheer height, the worid’s offshore projects dwaf the tallest building and are recognized as among the largest and most complex engineering projects in history?
To put it in perspective (and to scale ),here are just a few examples of offshore projects and their dizzying heights versus some of the more well known land-based structures found across the globe………
Towering at 1306.0m. the ursa platform tower was tallest man-made structure in when completed in 1998.it’s still monumentally taller than any current or planned land-held project.
When first completed in2000 at 640.m, the Petronius compliant tower was the world’s tallest freestanding structure. It’s still the tallest for offshore gas platforms.
At 579.7m the baldplate compliant tower was the first ever free-standing offshore compliant tower-a design still used to combat hurricane force winds such as those in the gulf of mexico.
Reining at 529.1m the Bullwinkle platform took 10 years to build and still holds the world record for the tallest fixed jacket structure ever placed in the sea –one it’s held since 1989.
Completed in 1996 and at 472.0m. the troll a platform has the distinction of being the tallest structure ever moved by mankind.
And which structure is this? It’s the perdido regional host.
It holds several world records including deepest oil development, the deepest drilling and production plateform , and will produce oil from the deepest subsea well in the world . it’s total height is a whopping.
That’s about 2.5km high. Perdido is over 5 times the height of the CN towor, and 3 times the height of world’s current tallest buiding, the burj khalifa.
It’s amazing how little credit these modern marvels of offshore engineering get when we think “world biggest” .
