Hundreds of protesters opposed to BP’s plans to drill for oil in the Great Australian Bight have gathered at Victor Harbor, where Sea Shepherd’s flagship vessel the Steve Irwin has made a rare South Australian stopover.
BP wants to drill deep exploration wells about 400 kilometres west of Port Lincoln on Eyre Peninsula.
But the company is still seeking approval after previous attempts were knocked back by the regulator, the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA).
A map released yesterday by the Wilderness Society pinpoints two of BP’s proposed locations in the Great Australian Bight Marine Park.
Sea Shepherd managing director Jeff Hansen addressed a gathering of protesters and said South Australia could not afford an offshore environmental disaster.
