The volumes sold were the highest across the 11 daily auctions held on the ESP so far in 2019 and the most since December 14, 2018. The last few auctions have offered the most varied options for gas sales since the ESP was launched in late September 2018, with day-ahead and balance-of-month gas added to the usual month-ahead or two month-ahead offers. Its expanded sales are an attempt by Gazprom Export to widen its role in the European spot market in addition to sales under its traditional long-term contract model. In the auction Friday, it sold a total of 35 million cu m of gas for short-term delivery — either day-ahead, weekend or balance-of-month — to the Dutch TTF hub, the German Gaspool and NCG hubs, and the Austrian virtual trading point. That is a sharp increase of previous prompt gas sales, which had been for just single-digit volumes. Gazprom Export also sold 25 million cu m of gas for February delivery and 21 million cu m for March delivery to Gaspool.
