LNG bunkering set to accelerate globally in 2019: SEALNG If 2018 was the tipping point for LNG bunkering, 2019 will be the year for its rapid uptake as expanded infrastructure, tighter environmental regulations in shipping and expectations of favorable economics give it a boost, SEALNG chairman Peter Keller said in a statement Thursday. Overall, the LNG-powered fleet has grown globally from 118 LNG-powered vessels in operation in 2017, to 143 LNG-powered vessels in operation – with an additional 135 on order and 135 LNG-ready ships either in operation or on order, according to ‘DNV GL Alternative Fuels Insight’, Keller said. ‘DNV GL Alternative Fuels Insight’ is a platform set up by accredited registrar and classification society, DNV GL, meant to support the shipping industry’s transition to cleaner fuel. Orders for LNG-powered vessels span a variety of vessel types including tankers, cruise ships, container ships, car carriers, and Very Large Ore Carriers. Within the cruise ships segment, as of March 2018, out of the 94 cruise ships on the global order-book, 18 under construction were LNG-powered, he said. Not only did this represent 20% of all newbuildings for the cruise industry, but also 25% of newbuilding capacity due to the size of the vessels ordered.
