Shell completes sale of New Zealand oil, gas assets for $578 million Royal Dutch Shell has completed the sale of its New Zealand oil and gas assets to Austrian integrated oil and gas company OMV for $578 million, Shell said in a statement Friday. The move is consistent with Shell’s global drive to simplify its upstream portfolio, the company said. It first announced the sale in March. The sale includes the Maui and Pohokura fields, and tank farms, and the sale of Shell’s interest in and operatorship of the Great South Basin venture, which was subject to a separate agreement. Shell’s fully owned subsidiary Shell Taranaki took over operatorship of the Maui (48%), Pohokura (83.75%) and Tank Farm assets in August 2017. Pohoura and Maui produce more than 70% of the gas needed for the New Zealand market and a substantial amount of condensate, Shell says on its website. It held a 61% share in the Great South Basin permit, off the coast of Otago and Southland, which Shell had been exploring. In April, New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that her Coalition Government would not issue any further offshore oil and gas exploration permits. The existing exploration and mining rights would, however, be protected, the government said at the time. Shell has been implementing a $30 billion divestment program for 2016-18 including oil sands interests in Canada, onshore upstream operations in Gabon, assets in the UK North Sea, and Australia.
