The European Commission has already launched a study looking at coupling with the power sector to produce renewable and decarbonized gases, and is planning further studies on improving the EU’s gas market rules and aligning them with the power market. The aim is to build a limited list of recommendations which could be developed into formal proposals to change the EU’s internal gas market legislation, an EC source said in December. What happens next depends entirely on the incoming EU commissioners, who start a new five-year mandate in November. They will decide if and what changes are needed, which makes formal legal proposals unlikely before 2020.
