Asia Demand for LNG Brings in Gas Carrier Orders Growing demand for liquefied natural gas from countries like China, India, Japan and Korea pumps up orders for LNG carriers, with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering being the main benefactor. The Korea yard, which specialises on large gas carriers, says it has clinched a potential $1.1B order for two LNG ships from an unnamed US customer. DSME has so far this year booked orders for 14 LNG carriers, which command a bigger profit margin than other kinds of vessels, and expects more orders next year and as LNG freight rates continue to grow. “Many countries including China want cleaner heating technologies and LNG is the top choice,” a DSME official said. “With freight rates hovering around 20% above breakeven levels, we expect orders next year to be higher than this year.”
