Resources Minister Matt Canavan has given final approval for exploration off Western Australia state, Victoria and the territory of Ashmore and Cartier Islands. “The awarding of seven new permits to a mix of small, medium and large explorers committing to new exploration in Australia demonstrates investor confidence in our offshore oil and gas sector,” he says. In May, Canavan said he was concerned about energy supply, as Australia’s oil production had dropped “alarmingly” over decades. The government last year reissued 2 exploration permits abandoned by oil giant BP to Norwegian company Equinor, formerly known as Statoil, to explore in the environmentally sensitive Great Australian Bight.
