DJ Price Matters for US Oil Exports The US government’s latest weekly oil report is reinforcing the notion that US oil exporters are only achieving big success when they sell at a deep discount to their global competitors. And that may be a problem since US exporters are largely shale producers whose production costs tend be much higher than their global competitors. US oil exporters quickly lost their edge a couple months ago when the price discount between their WTI fell to just $4/bbl vs their global rival Brent, with US oil exports dropping to just 1.2M bpd in late July. But then the WTI discount bulged again, to around $10/bbl (WTI’s currently $70 vs $79 for Brent), and sure enough exports last week rebounded to 2.4M bpd.
