Light, sweet crude for May delivery rose $1.95, or 2.9%, to $68.47 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the highest close since December 2014. Brent, the global benchmark, rose $1.90, or 2.7%, to $73.48 a barrel. On Wednesday, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that crude stockpiles fell by 1.1 million barrels in the week ended April 13, exceeding average estimates from analysts surveyed by The Wall Street Journal and from the American Petroleum Institute, an industry group. Meanwhile, gasoline inventories fell by 3 million barrels last week and distillate inventories fell by 3.1 million barrels.
