Global Oil Demand to Keep Rising Next Year, OPEC Says World oil demand should grow by 1.26 million barrels a day in 2018, according to OPEC’s latest monthly report. That’s “slightly less than in the current year and broadly in line with the average growth seen over the last five years,” the cartel notes. Factors driving oil demand next year, OPEC says, include car sales in the U.S, China and India, expansions in the U.S. petrochemical sector and the development of propane dehydrogenation plants in China. However, the demand forecast could be dampened by a “higher level of substitution towards other fuels, efficiency gains, subsidy reductions, and digitalization and technological developments,” the report says. Oil demand this year is expected to grow by 1.27 million barrels a day, according to the cartel.
