Uganda Set To Issue 1st Oil Exploration License in 10 Years
Uganda is set to award its first oil exploration since 2007 as the country steps up efforts to lure more investors in its nascent oil industry, says Stephen Isabalija, permanent secretary and the energy ministry. An exploration deal with Nigeria’s Oranto Petroleum International will be signed in Kampala Thursday, ending a decade-long ban on new licenses. Estimated at 6.5 billion barrels, Uganda currently holds East Africa’s largest undeveloped crude reserves. Despite falls in global crude prices, current operators–Total SA and Cnooc Ltd. plan to invest $8 billion to develop the fields, which may pump as much as 230,000B/D by 2020.
