OPEC Sees US Shale Uptick Slowing Down OPEC thinks an uptick in rival US shale production will slow down as costs will increase, according to cartel officials. The group’s advisory body, the Economic Commission Board, is meeting Wednesday and Thursday this week to prepare a May 25 meeting of ministers from OPEC and its allies to decide on an extension of production cuts for nine months. Officials in the group are worried that higher oil prices driven by its efforts has benefited rival US producers of expensive oil who can now pump more. But while US production is coming more strongly than expected, some officials at the ECB argue shale could slow down next year because of cost inflation amid rising competition for rigs and the rehiring of laid-off staff.
