Vietnam to Test Second Oil Refinery in July
By Vu Trong Khanh
HANOI–Vietnam Oil & Gas Group and its partners will later this year test Vietnam’s second oil refinery, which is expected to reduce the country’s reliance on imported refined petroleum products.
PetroVietnam’s Nghi Son refinery in Thanh Hoa province, 260 kilometers south of Hanoi, will have a refining capacity of 200,000 barrels of crude oil a day. It will process Kuwaiti crude oil supplied exclusively by Kuwait Petroleum International.
“The investors are already testing some parts of the refinery and will test the whole facility by July this year,” Nguyen Dinh Xung, chairman of the province’s People’s Committee said Tuesday.
Idemitsu Kosan Co. (5019.TO) and Kuwait Petroleum each own a 35.1% stake in the $9 billion facility, while state-run PetroVietnam and Mitsui Chemicals Inc. (4183.TO) own 25.1% and 4.7%, respectively.
